Sleeve Gastrectomy Dallas

Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is a surgical weight loss procedure that involves removing a portion of the left side of the stomach. The portion removed is known as the greater curvature. The result is a smaller stomach that is about the size of a banana. In Dallas, Sleeve Gastrectomy is performed by the surgeons at Surgical Weight Management Solutions.

Sleeve gastrectomy is a less involved procedure than Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, where the stomach is divided and part of the small intestine is bypassed. In sleeve gastrectomy surgery, the functions of the stomach remain in tact, but the volume of the stomach is reduced. There is no rerouting of the intestines involved in this procedure. The stomach is made smaller, so the patient consumes less food and fewer calories to achieve significant weight loss.

In addition to consuming less food, there is another benefit to the removal of a large portion of the stomach. The stomach produces hormones to stimulate hunger. These hormones interfere with attempts at significant weight loss. With a large portion of the stomach removed, the hormones are greatly reduced and nearly eliminated, which further reduces feelings of hunger. This helps contribute to weight loss success.

Our Dallas patients considering weight loss surgery often ask about the risks involved in various procedures. In terms of risk, sleeve gastrectomy surgery is less risky than full gastric bypass surgery. The sleeve gastrectomy procedure is higher risk than adjustable gastric banding.

There are situations in which sleeve gastrectomy surgery is the best solution for the patient. People taking anti inflammatory medications may not be good candidates for gastric bypass surgery because anti inflammatory medicines can’t be taken after the surgery due to an increased risk of developing ulcers. In this case, a sleeve gastrectomy is often a better option.

Patients concerned about the potential risk of long term side effects of gastric bypass surgery may also choose a sleeve gastrectomy. Although sleeve gastrectomy surgery is less risky than traditional gastric bypass surgery, there are some potential risks involved. The risks, including leak, nausea and the possible need for a bypass in the future, are discusses with patients of Surgical Weight Management Solutions prior to surgery.

One of the benefits of sleeve gastrectomy surgery that appeals to many patients is there are fewer dietary restrictions than with gastric bypass surgery. While the patient will be consuming smaller quantities of food, a wider variety of foods can be eaten. Patients are given full instructions about diet after surgery before a decision is made to have weight loss surgery with our Dallas surgeons.

When making a decision for weight loss surgery, Dallas area patients have a free resource offered by Surgical Weight Management Solutions. We offer a free seminar with information about sleeve gastrectomy surgery and other weight loss surgery offered in our Dallas practice.

Attending a seminar with one of our sleeve gastrectomy surgeons in Dallas, Texas is the best way to learn about the procedures and lifestyle changes required after the surgery. In addition, we can answer any questions you may have about the procedures. You can sign up for the next seminar on our website.
